I'm Feie (Manx for "wild" – pronounced Faiy-ee), your resident Shirragh y ree, a peregrine falcon. I'm from just up the road in Douglas. I’ll keep the exact spot a secret, although I know I can trust you humans these days, but the instinct is hard to shake. Stay a while with me while I preen.
My species has long been one of the Isle of Man's success stories. See this ring on my leg? Humans placed it there when I was a chick. They cared for us, and for so many other species. Researchers, restorers, rescuers, all well respected work. They think they're watching me, recording where I go and what I need for their Wisdom Council. The funny thing is, it’s me watching them…
From above, I see young forests they planted growing high above their heads, peatlands lush and alive again with all the colours of a Manx kilt, streams and rivers running cooler and slower. I hunt over fields with wild edges, where the land provides food for local people and space for the rest of nature to flourish. In town and villages, houses have spaces for birds, bees, bats and more. Gardens have become tiny sanctuaries, all connected into one living patchwork where insects feed birds, and birds feed me.
The seas have recovered too. My cliff clamours with guillemots, gulls and kittiwakes, there’s plenty of food for them and fishers still return with full catches. Restored landscapes and seas protect my chicks and human homes from the winter storms.
I see the humans looking up at the sky often. Noticing. They know now that when birds thrive, everything thrives. Imagine a sky without birds, silent, wouldn't that feel eerie?
I hatched just five years ago, but my ancestors remember a time when the skies almost fell quiet. Humans were the ones to turn it around. They learned how to take only what they need, make it last, reuse and recycle, and think longer term. Every creature leaves its mark. At my eyrie, my nest, you'll find bones, feathers and shells, mine for now but eventually it will all become part of nature again.
Old plastic still washes up in my inlet sometimes, but I see the people and their inventions cleaning up, clever and determined. They’re working to leave a world worth inheriting, to all that comes after them.
